CCTA is leading a comprehensive approach to ensuring children's safety as they travel to their schools. We partnered with 511 Contra Costa to engage with school administrators, school districts, City/County staff, and local police departments to create safer conditions in drop-off and pick-up zones at schools, and to encourage more bicycling and walking among K-12 students across Contra Costa.
The 511 Contra Costa Safe Routes to School (SR2S) programs are branded as Street Smarts Diablo, in keeping with other Street Smarts programs in cities throughout the Bay Area. In Central and East County all elementary schools (77), middle schools (26) and most high schools (11 of 15) have participated in the Street Smarts Diablo program in the last two years, which includes over 70,000 students. These successful Street Smarts Diablo programs include:
CCTA is helping students get to school by providing the transportation they need to jumpstart their education. San Ramon Valley's TRAFFIX School Bus Program operates new buses with state-of-the-art safety features, and helps reduce traffic congestion caused by parents driving their children to and from school.
The West Contra Costa Transportation Advisory Committee (WCCTAC) Low-Income Student Bus Pass Program provides bus fare subsidies for low-income high school students in West Contra Costa Unified School District. The free service is eligible to all students qualified under Free and Reduced Lunch Program (FRL) on a "first-come, first-served" basis.
